Common questions
How is federal income tax calculated?
Start with your income, subtract pre-tax contributions such as a traditional 401(k), then subtract the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly) or your itemized deductions if larger. The rest is taxed in slices at 10%, 12%, 22% and higher rates.
How much federal tax do I pay on $100,000?
A single filer with $100,000 of income and the standard deduction owes about $13,170 in 2026 federal income tax, an effective rate of 13.2%. Married couples filing jointly owe about $7,640 on the same income.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income, the top bracket you reach. Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your income, which is always lower because the first slices of income are taxed at lower rates or not at all.
Does this include Social Security and Medicare?
No. This calculator shows federal income tax only. Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500) and Medicare (1.45%) are separate. Use the take-home pay calculator to see every tax on your paycheck.
