Common questions
How do I calculate take-home pay?
Start with your gross pay for the pay period, then subtract federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), state and local income taxes, and deductions such as 401(k) contributions and health insurance. What is left is your take-home (net) pay.
What is the difference between gross pay and take-home pay?
Gross pay is your pay before anything is taken out. Take-home pay, also called net pay, is what reaches your bank account after taxes and deductions.
How much is $65,000 a year after taxes?
It depends on your state. In Texas, with no state income tax, a single filer with a 5% 401(k) and $80 per paycheck for health insurance takes home about $1,918.32 every two weeks. Pick your state above to compare.
Why is my take-home pay lower than I expected?
Besides taxes, pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) contributions, health, dental and vision premiums, HSA and FSA contributions all come out of each paycheck. Some states also take small amounts for disability or paid-leave insurance.
